Bilks-A-Million

Welcome to my world. A place where small details are picked up with tweezers.

Sliced into thin specimens, and placed under microscopes. Usually have three ‘scopes going at a time.

Meanwhile, giant decisions are passed through my brain with little more than adequate thought.

It is in this realm I find myself at my local Books-A-Million bookstore one afternoon.

I’m sitting close to the “What we recommend” section. I’ve always been interested in this shelf. Here, the marketing magic is stripped away. Here are real recommendations from real readers. Their best suggestions.

As I order my coffee from Chrisee, my favorite barista, I ask her if she had a recommendation on the shelf.

Chrisee stares toward the books, and says, “Oh, those are books the publishers pay to have in that section.”

Let me get this straight.

The “What we recommend” section is nothing more than another marketing kiosk?

That certainly explains the selection of books recommended.

The Big Bad Book of Sports?

Where Golf Is Great: The Finest Courses of Scotland and Ireland?

Really?

Disappointing.
